Shelley Niro is a member of the Six Nations Reserve, a Mohawk of the Turtle Clan.

A graduate of the Ontario College of Art, she received her MFA from the University of Western Ontario.  In 2001 she became an Eiteljorg recipient at the Museum of Western and Indian Arts, Indiana, Indianapolis.  She participated in the “Women In The Director’s Chair” at the Banff Centre For The Arts in 2003.  In the fall of 2006 Shelley was selected to be a fellow with Women In Film and a recipient of the GM Accelerator Grants.

From March through May 2007 Shelley Niro and Jeff Thomasexhibited their photographs exploring issues of identity and stereotypes in a show entitled Contemporary Voices at Canada House, Trafalgar Square,  London UK.  Niro’s solo exhibition “Almost Fallen”is currently on tour.

Her film work includes the short films“TREE,”screened at the Images Festival in in Toronto and “Rechargin’,” a collaboration with Six Nations choreographer and dancer Santee Smith.  Her feature films include It Starts With a Whisper (1992) and Honey Moccasin (1998)For more on Shelley Niro’s work, follow this link to an excellent introductory interview.
