Peter Nyers' teaching and research interests lie at the intersection of international relations and contemporary social and political theory. He specializes in the politics of global refugee and migration flows and their implications for state sovereignty, political subjectivity, and human agency. More broadly, he is interested in topics relating to citizenship studies, globalization, international political theory, local/global social movements, and critical security studies.
Peter is an active member of a growing international and multidisciplinary network of critical citizenship studies scholars. His research in this area focuses on assessing citizenship practices in relation to governmentalities of anxiety and fear that have emerged in the global war on terror. In addition, he serves- as the Managing Editor of the peer-reviewed journal Citizenship Studies. Peter is the author of Rethinking Refugees: Beyond States of Emergency (Routledge 2006) as well as several articles and book chapters on the topic of migrant political agency.
